The Cyprus Board on Books for Young People (CYBBY) was founded in 1974 and is the
Cyprus national section of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People).
It is a Non-Governmental Organisation, which is committed to the promotion of children’s
literature. CYBBY has a management committee of nine members: President, Vice President,
Secretary, Treasure, Liaison Officer and four committee members. The committee members
are elected every two years by the CYBBY General Assembly. Sub-committees are also
formed to assist on special events. CYBBY has about 430 individual members, who participate
in current activities, General Assemblies, seminars, contests, sub-committees etc.
CYBBY members are teachers (40%), authors (16%), illustrators (3%), students (3%),
journalists (1.2%), librarians (1%) and other friends of children’s books.
CYBBY publishes the journal Anemi, which is distributed to all CYBBY members, as
well as to a large number of pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools. The Board
allocates annual literary awards in several categories. Several of the award-winning
texts are then published as children’s books. It frequently organizes relevant seminars,
conferences, presentations, round-table discussions, book presentations, award ceremonies,
and other events. CYBBY has been a partner in several European projects, while it
also participates in international events, such as the biennial IBBY International
Congress, International Festivals and Exhibitions, Literary Competitions (e.g. Hans
Christian Andersen Award; IBBY Honor List; Astrid Lindgren Award, etc.) CYBBY is
in constant contact and collaboration with IBBY and other national sections of IBBY
across the globe.
